My squirrels are getting bold. I walked out to fill the corn holders and a momma squirrel stayed just on the other side of the tree while I loaded, then came to eat before I walked away. The photo below was taken with my phone with no zoom. She was about three feet away from me.
Despite my effort to continue to water the cucumber plants, the Texas heat turned the vines crispy. I picked off the small remaining cucumbers and also broke open the ear of … corn? that formed on the volunteer plant in my pumpkin patch.
It all went to the chickens. I do have quite a large basil plant that I will harvest before the weather turns cold, and the pumpkin vines are not crispy, but also not producing fruit.
I’m going to wait for a while before I harvest the corn-looking protuberance. I did not plant it; the most likely culprit is a squirrel.

Today I have a picture of my garden, where I have planted pumpkin, onions, and basil.
I did not plant the corn. I think the squirrels have been helping.
No sign of pumpkin fruit yet, but the vines seem happy.
The squirrels really appreciate that I put out dried ears of corn, but they go through one ear in a day. I added an obstacle, so they have to work harder for the corn by tying knots in a 1/2” hemp rope and adding a screw eye. The corn is twisted onto the screw and hangs in the middle of the rope.
The squirrels have figured out how to get one kernel at a time off, but prefer the birdseed. We have a four squirrel family, so maybe one will figure this out while the others are gorging on seed.
