The chicks are now 16 days old, and have grown so much! It was too cold to get them out of the brooder and weigh them, but we’ll do that soon, on a nicer day. I did need to raise up one of the heaters because the larger chicks had to duck and crawl to get in. I kept the other one down low because we still have smaller chicks. Their colors are definitely changing and differing. We have lighter shaded chicks and darker chicks. The feed store said that their chick source guaranteed 95% females. This should be interesting.

In the trenches
Well, at least digging trenches, which is how I spent most of my day today. We had rain this weekend, so the ground was soft and easier to dig, so I dug as much as a I could. I think the trench around the coop and runs is deep enough to bury hardware cloth to deter digging predators. I hope so. I’m beat. My health tracker says that I burned 2,900 calories today.

And here is another chick video. 5 days old!
Faverolle Paper Popup
It has been cold again. So cold that it is not nice working outside. Being stuck inside all weekend is frustrating; paper craft to the rescue! A nice spring theme activity was in order.

I have shared how much I like paper crafts, so when I saw a new (to me) way to make a popup, I had to make one with chickens! Since we are getting Faverolles, I needed a Faverolle hen and chicks. I made pencil sketches to get started on forms, then used Adobe Illustrator to refine the shapes. I’m quite pleased with the hen, she is a cutie with her beard and feathered feet! I will probably use her in other projects.
I made a video on how to assemble the popup:
And here is the image file. It works best printed on cardstock. Free for personal and educational use. Please link back to this post to share.
