Asian Lady Beetle

We usually have to buy a kit to see beetle metamorphosis, but an Asian Lady Beetle pupated on the fence gate and when it emerged, stayed on the fence. Yes, I know the Asian Lady Beetles are an invasive species, but it was still neat to see the transformation not under glass.

Yes, these photos are all of the same individual. Yes, it is December. 2020.

Back to the drawing board

Frozen oregano under a clear plastic sheet

So covering my herb pots with clear plastic shower liner did not protect the plants from freezing. It seemed like a good idea. It is a good thing I have skills in other areas, and that there are farmers who do know how to grow things.

Filters

Our tree with an old fashioned glasses style filter held over the camera lens

We went to a drive through holiday light show, and the kids received paper glasses with filtered lenses. They didn’t work very well with the outside lights, just made everything have a blurry halo, but for the inside lights on our tree, they made each point a snowflake! We had a fun couple of minutes playing with the snowflake filter. I’m not really sure how old fashioned these are; I really expected them to be the rainbow type I had as a kid. It seems that the snowflake refraction pattern would actually take some sophisticated laser work on the film. Eh. It was a nice distraction.

Things to consider

Cat on my lap as seen through the warp

I’m trying some slightly thinner yarn on my frame loom and it is working much better with the sett (how far apart the warp strings are). I’m also experimenting with hatching (as seen in the picture above where the blue and white mix). As I consider buying or making a loom that is heddle bar friendly and has adjustable tension, I also need to consider lap space. My cat has started to reclaim lap time after the arrival of the puppy, and she doesn’t much care what I am doing as long as she can lounge!

Crisp Celery?

Celery washed, cut, and stood on end in water

I over ordered celery, and in an effort to keep it fresh and crisp, I’m trying to keep one end in water in the fridge. I don’t have a round container, so I improvised with a plastic bag and some kitchen twine. I have read that wrapping celery in tin foil will keep it fresh, but it also hides it from view. Hidden celery doesn’t get consumed in this house!
